Recently, I don't know whether the boss is hot or wants me to leave. He even thought about using a general-purpose MCU to do MPEG decoding and LCD controller. He also asked me to come up with a report within a week.
His idea is this. The MCU reads the JPEG or MPEG4 data through the USB interface and then decodes it with software, and sends it to the LCD screen for display through this MCU. I have heard about decoding JPEG and MPEG4 with software, but I do n’t need LCD control IC And I have directly used a general-purpose MCU to control the screen. I have never heard of it. The signals such as TCON and synchronization required by the LCD screen, and what brightness and contrast adjustment can be achieved with a general-purpose MCU. I do n’t have any clues. Is the boss's technical level too high? I do n’t know if there is any expert who can give pointers. Is this possible? Or is the boss just trying to let me back?
By the way, I used to be responsible for maintaining LCD control IC programs in the company, such as WELTREND, MSTAR, etc., but these chips are used directly to implement the functions of the LCD control IC through general-purpose MCU (without LCD controller). But it's unheard of. Little, consulted here, you must die to understand.

Just don't leave? Let the boss say it? Otherwise you will be fooled! ! !

Simple image text can also be achieved, what you said can't be, it is too cost-effective

Boss, it’s hard to find a job now. It’s totally unfeasible to listen to your opinions? If you can’t, just report to him next week that the ideas can’t be realized. Alas.

There are many MCUs with LCD drivers, but they all drive field-type LCDs.
If you are using a dot matrix, then most LCDs are made together with the driver circuit
Its practical MCU to directly drive the LCD is not difficult, as long as the MCU has enough i/o
If you let me do this project, my first consideration is the computing power of the MCU. It is estimated that the software decoding is a bit mysterious. Choose ARM10 above 400Mhz to try it.There are many source codes available directly on Linux.
So this scheme is as follows
mcu select arm10@400MHz, with usb interface
LCD selection, dot matrix true color TFT with backlight and driver
Use ECOS or LINUX operating system
Of course, some devices are also required to make peripheral circuits, such as falsh, ram, etc.

Thank you for your ideas, now I also want to thoroughly understand whether it is feasible, and those who are technically want to ask everything.
soilkingis specifically from a technical point of view, software decoding has at least an idea. But I am confused about the problem of LCD. The general LCD modules are all with backlight and driver IC (the company currently uses this) However, the LCD control IC is generally external. Do you mean to use the MCU's IO to imitate the LCD controller to send out TCON and other information? If you don't use the LCD control IC, you need to use the MCU to implement SCALER and OSD overlay (using OSD IC ) And other functions, is this a bit mysterious? I wonder if you have a more specific idea?

There are more MCUs with LCD controllers. See what kind of LCD you use, the real-time requirements for decoding and so on. Suggestion can look at MCIMX31 of freescale.

Owner, it's the end of the year. Does your boss want to pay bonus? :)
