Problems with firewall iptables

The server is a RH AS machine, and I want to use iptables to control the ports, such as 8080 1521, etc. Now the question is what is the difference between editing the file / etc / sysconfig / iptables directly in SETUP? I changed the iptables file directly. Do I have to run services iptables start? Will the system update automatically after setting OK in SETUP? Still have to order?
